A Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) is a facility that treats wastewater from homes, offices, industries, and other establishments to make it safe for disposal or reuse. Sewage contains harmful substances like bacteria, viruses, chemicals, and solid waste, which can pollute the environment and pose health risks if not properly treated. The treatment process typically involves three main stages. In the primary treatment, large solids and grit are removed through screening and sedimentation. Secondary treatment uses biological processes, such as aeration and microbial action, to break down organic matter and remove dissolved pollutants. Some plants also include a tertiary treatment stage to further purify the water by removing nutrients, pathogens, and any remaining contaminants. The treated water is then disinfected, often using chlorine or UV light, before being released into natural water bodies or reused for non-potable purposes like irrigation, toilet flushing, or industrial cooling.
